Monday Morning

Standard

Lancaster lived in a house with his cat family and his human family. He had a mama, two sisters and two brothers. His human family was a Mom, a Dad, three girls and two boys. He had fun playing with everyone; especially in the summer when the kids were out of school. Dad had a full-time job; Mom only worked a few days a week. It was perfect. Everybody got along and seemed happy. There was only one time during the week that Dad seemed grouchy and that was on Monday morning.

Lancaster couldn’t understand that because one day was just the same as the other. He would eat, play, sleep and then repeat the process. What difference did it make if the day was Monday? One summer day, company came to the house to spend the weekend. Lancaster was excited to have more people to play with because the company brought two more kids with them.

However, Lancaster didn’t realize what he was in for. He was able to play, but it was more than he was used to. Didn’t they understand that he had his regular routine of eating, playing and sleeping and that he couldn’t play all day and half the night? He’d try to sleep, but the kids were teasing him or bothering him constantly. On Sunday evening, the company finally left, but Lancaster was exhausted. He didn’t even want to get up the next morning when it was time to eat. He opened one eye and realized why Dad was grouchy on Monday mornings!

The Mickey Mouse Club

Standard

As kittens, Rupert and his brothers and sisters naturally liked to play. There were many things to play with, such as balls, string, yarn, and whatever they could find in the house. Sometimes, it turned out, they played with things they shouldn’t. However, that didn’t stop them. Out of all the things Rupert liked, his favorite became a mouse filled with catnip. He would toss it in the air and then go pounce on it. He had so much fun and would play until he just was too tired to move anymore.

When winter turned to spring and the snow was all gone, the kittens were allowed to go outside and play in the yard. Oh, my, was that a treat! There were all kind of new things to investigate and discover. One day, Rupert was lying down next to his mama just enjoying the sunshine and watching his brothers and sisters. Suddenly, a small creature ran past them and startled Rupert. “What was that?”, asked Rupert. “That’s a real mouse, not a toy one.” said Mama. Rupert was amazed at how fast a real mouse was! He couldn’t wait until he could play with the real thing!

The humans in the house started talking about the days of their growing up and watching the Mickey Mouse Club on TV. Rupert couldn’t quit thinking about that and the real mouse he saw out in the yard. Here was his chance! He decided to join this Mickey Mouse thing so he could play with real mice. However, he became very disappointed.

Spring Has Sprung!

Standard

I’m sure that we have a few more snowstorms coming in this part of the country, but it’s spring according to the calendar. Let’s see how our furry friends like spring.

Since we lost an hour a few weeks back, it takes a while to get moving.

On top of that, cats may have trouble getting their humans up!

However, once our friends are up, there are things to do.

Once the necessities are out of the way, it’s time to eat.

and relax.

Then it’s time to play hide and seek.

Play with friends.

Catch a mouse.

Exercise

Have a treat.

After all that, it’s time to rest again.
Before evening, there might be time to pretend to be a Superhero

or to just simply watch people go by.

Some cats “spring” forward better than others. Don’t think this one is handling it too well!

Are you happy that spring is here?

Who could ask for anything more? Oh, well maybe ONE more thing.

Yup, I would say these cats have it pretty good. What do you think? Send us your suggestions of what else they might need.

Cat Version of March Madness

Standard

It’s that time of year again when basketball fans are so excited to see who ends up in the Final Four and who goes on to win it all. Cats don’t really care, but they do consider the following things as MADNESS!

Being obedient

Lack of attention

Things hoomans do

Not catching birds

Having a dog around

 Not enough time to relax
Finding hidden toys
Having to explain themselves
Getting lost
Being dressed up

So I guess we all have our version of madness. Mine is going through withdrawal when football season is over. What’s yours?

If My Cat Were President

Standard

My first thought would be that it would be a disaster! However, he seems pretty smart about some things, like getting me to do what he wants me to do. Maybe he could get something done. However, the capital would have to move to Wyoming before he would even consider it.

Sammy, you are now President of the United States.

You don’t need to hide. It’s really true!

Oh, I can tell that you are REALLY EXCITED about this opportunity.

You’re going to have to give up some of your activities, such as ghost writing for me.

cat-typing

You’ll have to have an office staff

office-assistant

who hopefully won’t play around too much and get their jobs done.

catch-the-virtual-mouse

Then there’s the matter of Congress. Hopefully, some cats will be elected that can do something for the country instead of being so dysfunctional. (Well, maybe not)

What Are We Looking At

You’ll also have to work during the day most of the time and not the middle of the night.

its-not-3-am

Oh, let’s see. You’re going to need to have the Secret Service around you all the time.

Now that you have your staff, what are you doing to do for the country?

Homes for everyone.

bunk-beds

Plenty of things to play with.

Food for everyone.

hare-in-my-pancakes

That’s pretty basic stuff, Sammy. Is there anything you do for us humans?

Oh, I see. You can listen to us and see what we need. That’s very nice.

It looks like the interview is over. He’s giving me that knock-it-off look.

Guess we’ll have to wait until the “President” is ready to talk to us again.

Have a wonderful President’s Day on Monday, everyone.

Food Puzzles For Cats!

Standard

One of the New Year’s resolutions that people make, including me, is to get into better shape physically and lose some of those pounds we put on over the holidays. We need to think about our pets too, not only at this time of year, but all year long. My vet told me that neutered male cats have a real tendency to put on weight. Once that starts, it’s hard to control. Had heard about food puzzles so decided to check it out. Here’s what I found.

Cats love to play with toys and chase fake mice around the house and this sometimes extends to their food. And when bored, our cats tend to eat more especially when dry food is let out all day long.  Food Puzzles can help make cats work for their food while stimulating them at the same time.

What are food puzzles?

Food puzzles are contraptions or home-made puzzles that make cats work for their food. The puzzles can be as simple as putting dry food in a closed and empty cottage cheese container and cutting a hole in the side, so that the cat has to bat around the container to get the food to fall out

Food Puzzles can help our cats from over-eating and behave better according to a new study

Cats given food puzzles thrive as they tend to be more physically fit and happier. It seems there are also fewer behavioral problems, such as aggression and over-grooming, than cats with regular food bowls.

“Food puzzles provide cats with exercise and mental stimulation,” said review co-author Mikel Delgado, a doctoral candidate of psychology at the University of California, Berkeley. Delgado is also a certified cat behavior consultant with the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants.  “It gives them an outlet to let cats be their natural predatory selves.”

Indoor cats tend to be overweight since they don’t have to work for food and get less exercise

Indoor kitties are often given unlimited food, and don’t have to work for their dinner.  “It’s no wonder that indoor felines have a high risk of obesity, Type 2 diabetes, joint problems and chronic lower urinary tract signs,” she said. Indoor cats can also have behavioral problems, including attention-seeking and stress-related behaviors, such as house soiling.

nothing-to-eat

In the review, cats that used food puzzles were thinner and behaved better

Food puzzles can alleviate those health and behavior problems. In the review, Delgado and her colleagues assessed about 30 cases that they had personally observed when food puzzles helped kitties. For instance, an obese 8-year-old male cat lost 20 percent of its body weight after using food puzzles for a year. Another case was a pair of sibling cats. They were constantly meowing for food, wanting the owner’s attention and stealing leftover food from dirty plates on the counter. The owner stopped leaving out leftover food, and gave the cats food puzzles, which slowed down both cats’ eating. Afterward, the cats stopped meowing for food so much, and they left the owner alone while they were distracted with the food puzzle.

Food puzzles have worked on kittens and even senior cats

Food puzzles have worked on kittens, senior cats, three-legged cats and blind cats.  Delgado did caution  that young, old and disabled cats should be given easy puzzles as a way to ensure that they’re getting enough food.  And, for the cats who love them, keep them challenged by changing the puzzle.

our-deal

I think I’d better get started on making some food puzzles! Found some directions for making five different ones which I will share with you next week.

Did You Get a New Kitten for Christmas?

Standard

A new, furry, lovable kitten is always fun, but sometimes that fun wears off when the holidays are over. I’ve always believed that if you’re going to be a pet owner, you need to be a responsible pet owner. It breaks my heart to see animals mistreated because their owners are tired of them. All of us who are animal lovers know how precious these little lives are and that they deserve good care like the rest of our family.

Kind to an Animal

If the animal was a gift that you don’t want anymore, then please find it a home where it can be happy or put it in a no-kill shelter. The shelters are full of pets looking for a forever home. Some people prefer to adopt an older animal rather than getting a young one. An older cat is not as mischievous as a kitten can be nor are they as active.

Adopt a Senior Pet

Of course, who could turn this down?

Adoption

If you’re up for some adventure, you could always adopt a feral cat. It took my Sammy a long time to learn to trust humans, but the patience was worth it. He is the most lovable lap cat now and just gives me so much joy.

Feral Cats

Feral Cats Show Love

No matter which method that new cat arrived, they will return your love many times over.

Happiness Is

Pure Love

First Thing

Through all of this, however, you have to remember one basic fact. No one owns a cat!

No One Owns a Cat

Owned By a Cat

And finally……………

‘Twas the Night Before Christmas (According to Cats)

Standard

‘Twas the night before Christmas

and all through the house

all the creatures were stirring.

Even the mouse!

The stockings were hung by the chimney with care

in hopes that St. Claws soon would be there.

Mom in her kerchief and I in my cap

had just settled down for a long winter’s nap.

When out on the lawn arose such a clatter,

I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter.

When what to my wondering eyes should appear

but a miniature sleigh

and one old horse.

All the reindeer were sick

so Santa had to rely

on one old horse

that just couldn’t fly.

When Santa was let in

through the front door,

he immediately scared

the cats on the floor.

The cats were excited

to see what they’d get

as Santa delivered the gifts

to each pet.

Having finished his work,

Santa went to the door.

He climbed in his sleigh

and started to snore.

As the horse moved on

and was soon out of sight,

Santa was dreaming about the catnip

he would have later tonight.

Hope you enjoyed this. Want to wish each one of my readers a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful 2017! God bless each and every one of you.

This Is BOOORING!

Standard

Haven’t written short stories for a while, so decided to do that this week. Enjoy!

The Smith family was the average, busy, American family. Mr. Smith went to work with his briefcase every day and came home at night with things to do for the next day. Mrs. Smith also worked. She was a teacher and carried a briefcase too. Tommy, 12, and Sally, 10, were their children. They carried backpacks to school. Merlin was their kitty cat and became very curious about what was in the briefcases and backpacks.

One night while everyone was asleep, Merlin decided this was his chance to check things out. Oh, my goodness! The treasures that he found! There were all kind of papers to jump on and slide all over the floor as well as pencils, erasers, pens, and other things to paw and chase. By the time he was through looking at everything, the living room was a mess. The Smith family was not very happy with him in the morning.

Several weeks later, it was a Bring Your Pet to School Day. The kids talked their mother into taking Merlin to school with them. After school, they had activities to attend, so Merlin needed to stay with Mrs. Smith. However, she had a school board meeting to attend and brought Merlin with her. Merlin did NOT enjoy this because………………….
