Mother, May I?

Standard

It is now the month of May. Saw a wish the other day on Facebook for a happy May Day which reminded me of a game we used to play as kids called Mother, May I? That gave me the idea for this week’s blog. Hope you enjoy.

Mother, may I go play with my bird friends?

Mother, may I talk to my friend, Tommy?

Mother, may I have some tuna?

Mother, may I tell the teacher how much I like her?

Mother, may  I be Supercat?

Mother, may I help you make the bed?

Mother, may I sit down?

Mother, may I find a place to cool down?

Mother, may I sharpen my claws?

My, these cats are just full of questions. Maybe the most important one is Mother, may I count on you to protect me?

That’s enough questions for today. See you next week.

April Fool!

Standard

Wow! It’s already the first of April. Don’t know where the time went, but it flew by. Since it’s the first of April, you know what that means. Wonder if any of our friends had April Fool tricks played on them?

Breakfast is waiting for you in the kitchen, Simon.

If you let me dress you up, you can play with the hamsters.

You can sit in the extra chair for as long as you want.

Be careful of the new lamp!

Rover, the cat told me she wants to play with you.

Hey, Mason! Guess who is with me.

It’s a beautiful day outside. Go and play.

This family needs a dog!

Humans are in charge, not cats.

Do you play any April Fool jokes on your friends? If so, we’d love to hear about them.

Cat Version of March Madness

Standard

It’s that time of year again when basketball fans are so excited to see who ends up in the Final Four and who goes on to win it all. Cats don’t really care, but they do consider the following things as MADNESS!

Being obedient

Lack of attention

Things hoomans do

Not catching birds

Having a dog around

 Not enough time to relax
Finding hidden toys
Having to explain themselves
Getting lost
Being dressed up

So I guess we all have our version of madness. Mine is going through withdrawal when football season is over. What’s yours?

Feline Hall of Fame

Standard

As a kitten, Oscar was very playful. As a matter of fact, he would play so hard that he would drop on the floor and go to sleep where he landed! The family hoped he would slow down as he grew up. No, Oscar kept on playing hard. One day while he was playing out in the yard, he jumped so high that he landed in the birdbath! He didn’t like the water, but he loved the feeling of jumping.

That made him wonder what he could find by jumping in the house. The family was always putting things up high where he couldn’t reach them. Well, he was going to fix that! First, it was the kitchen counters, then the bathroom sink, tables, dressers, etc. He was driving everyone nuts! They tried two-sided tape and special pads you could buy to keep cats off the counters. None of that worked. They finally tried spraying him with a squirt bottle.

That didn’t work either. In fact, he became so well known about his ability to resist the squirt bottle that he was voted into the Feline Hall of Fame.

I’m So Crabby!

Standard

The day started out great. The sun was shining, the birds were chirping and Hector had a chance to go outside and play. There was still snow on the ground, but it was starting to melt because of the sun. Since he hadn’t been outside for a while because of snowstorms, he really enjoyed exploring everything that was uncovered. He was having so much fun bouncing around. However, he lost his footing and fell face first into a pile of slush. That didn’t make him happy, but Mama cat cleaned his face when he went inside.

After a nap, he wanted to play with the kids in the house, but they were too busy. That made him sad so he went looking for his siblings. They didn’t want to play either! He kept telling himself that it was okay and that he would find something to do. Eventually he found some yarn sticking out of the bag that the Mom of the house had left out. Oh, boy, was that ever fun! He had that yarn everywhere by the time Mom found him. She decided he was still dirty and gave him a bath which he didn’t like at all!!

By the end of the day, his attitude has certainly changed. This is what he was thinking to himself:

How Are the Cats Doing on Their 2017 Resolutions?

Standard

We’re two weeks into the new year. How are you doing with the resolutions you made? Doing pretty good on mine, but let’s check in with some cats to see how they’re doing.

ca43d-beautiful2bface

He wanted to remain adorable and handsome. I think he’ll keep that resolution!

Resourcefulness is the name of the game here. I think this cat is doing a very good job of that.

resolutions

One cat wanted to be helpful by sitting on whatever I was going to pick up, but I think this cat is doing a much better job.

where-was-your-bone-10-minutes-ago

Another cat was going to forgive his enemies. I highly doubt that! Don’t think this cat will forgive anytime soon either.

mad-cat

The next resolution was exercising to stay in shape. A bit destructive, but definitely exercise!

if-it-makes-any-difference-i-caught-the-fly

One cat resolved to be kind to the dog. Looks like that’s going well.

together

Another cat was going to “learn him a book”. Doesn’t look like he’s being very patient about the whole thing.

turn-the-page

Along that same line, one was going to learn or study a new art form. I think he’s nailed it!

being-normal-is-boring

All of the cats resolved to spend more time with their friends.

favorite-show

As if 15 hours isn’t enough, they also all resolved to get more sleep.

cat-hugging-mouse

So far, I think the group has done pretty well with their resolutions. What do you think?

Cats Are FALLing

Standard

It’s official. Seasons have changed and it is now fall. Love this time of the year with the cooler temperatures and beaufiful colors. What does this have to do with cats? They notice the change of the seasons also. My friend, Colin, has some suggestions for keeping your cat happy during the fall season. Will share his ideas as well as my own. Here’s Colin!

The most important thing to do is to keep your cat active, to the end I have the following suggestions:

1. Hide small piles of catnip behind fragile objects on high shelves, this has the added benefit of giving your cat a chance to watch you clean up the mess.

2. Buy a number of life like toy mice and hide them. Your cats will find them and leave them where you will trip over them in the middle of the night and think it is a real mouse, which will entertain your cat for hours.

3. Give your cat a bath, he will find it fascinating to watch you tend your wounds.

4. Leave a bag of dry food slightly open, your cat will find a way to get it open and help herself to a tasty snack.

5. Start playing a game with your cat with treats, try tossing the treats to your cat.

If everything else fails, give your cat a nice soft blanket to sleep on in his or her favorite window.
Thank you, Colin! Good ideas even though some may backfire on you. 🙂 During this time of year, you may see cats FALLing asleep anywhere.

This Is BOOORING!

Standard

Haven’t written short stories for a while, so decided to do that this week. Enjoy!

The Smith family was the average, busy, American family. Mr. Smith went to work with his briefcase every day and came home at night with things to do for the next day. Mrs. Smith also worked. She was a teacher and carried a briefcase too. Tommy, 12, and Sally, 10, were their children. They carried backpacks to school. Merlin was their kitty cat and became very curious about what was in the briefcases and backpacks.

One night while everyone was asleep, Merlin decided this was his chance to check things out. Oh, my goodness! The treasures that he found! There were all kind of papers to jump on and slide all over the floor as well as pencils, erasers, pens, and other things to paw and chase. By the time he was through looking at everything, the living room was a mess. The Smith family was not very happy with him in the morning.

Several weeks later, it was a Bring Your Pet to School Day. The kids talked their mother into taking Merlin to school with them. After school, they had activities to attend, so Merlin needed to stay with Mrs. Smith. However, she had a school board meeting to attend and brought Merlin with her. Merlin did NOT enjoy this because………………….

The Yearly Visit to the Vet

Standard

Yup, it’s that time of year again when Kirby gets his regular checkup, his shots, etc. I used to dread this  because he was hard to catch and very noisy when he was in the exam room. Started following some of the advice I had read and written about in previous blogs which seemed to help. Brought out the carrier where he can go in anytime he wants (and come out), put treats and play toys in the carrier, and threw in something with my scent on it. That seemed to help a lot. Still doesn’t like to ride in the car. :>) Let’s just say it’s a work in progress.

In the beginning, I would be met with a face like this when I’d bring out the carrier:

Cat Selfies

(Especially the last one in the first row and the first one in the second row)

Getting him into the carrier would be something like this.

Say Uncle

While in the carrier, his attitude was probably:

Keep Calm and Hate Everyone

Thank goodness Mom got smarter and started considering how Kirby felt and how scary a trip to the vet can be. This part is much better now. Of course, once we are at the vets and he comes out of the carrier:

Murder Button

Dr. Molly has a way of keeping him calm if I leave the room. Don’t hear the screaching and the squalling anymore like I used to. Exam goes well and it’s time to go home. What a difference! Quiet and sleeping.

If You're Sleepy Raise Your Paws

But if the truth be known, he may be having these thoughts.

Once we’re home, the trip is just a thing of the past.

These links will take you to my previous blogs about preparing your cat for a more relaxed way of going to and seeing the vet. Wish I had known this when my boys were kittens. Sure would have made it a lot easier.

I Hate This Time of Year!

Standard

Before you go to bed tonight, be sure to move your clocks forward an hour. (Oh, joy!!) I’m being a little sarcastic there because I hate doing this. Seems like it takes me at least two weeks to catch up with the time. Maybe some of you are like me. One piece of advice I’ve heard to prepare for this is to go to bed early every night for a few weeks so you are ready for the time change when it happens. Try to convince a cat of that! They’d probably give me this kind of look.
