The Mickey Mouse Club

Standard

As kittens, Rupert and his brothers and sisters naturally liked to play. There were many things to play with, such as balls, string, yarn, and whatever they could find in the house. Sometimes, it turned out, they played with things they shouldn’t. However, that didn’t stop them. Out of all the things Rupert liked, his favorite became a mouse filled with catnip. He would toss it in the air and then go pounce on it. He had so much fun and would play until he just was too tired to move anymore.

When winter turned to spring and the snow was all gone, the kittens were allowed to go outside and play in the yard. Oh, my, was that a treat! There were all kind of new things to investigate and discover. One day, Rupert was lying down next to his mama just enjoying the sunshine and watching his brothers and sisters. Suddenly, a small creature ran past them and startled Rupert. “What was that?”, asked Rupert. “That’s a real mouse, not a toy one.” said Mama. Rupert was amazed at how fast a real mouse was! He couldn’t wait until he could play with the real thing!

The humans in the house started talking about the days of their growing up and watching the Mickey Mouse Club on TV. Rupert couldn’t quit thinking about that and the real mouse he saw out in the yard. Here was his chance! He decided to join this Mickey Mouse thing so he could play with real mice. However, he became very disappointed.

Feline Hall of Fame

Standard

As a kitten, Oscar was very playful. As a matter of fact, he would play so hard that he would drop on the floor and go to sleep where he landed! The family hoped he would slow down as he grew up. No, Oscar kept on playing hard. One day while he was playing out in the yard, he jumped so high that he landed in the birdbath! He didn’t like the water, but he loved the feeling of jumping.

That made him wonder what he could find by jumping in the house. The family was always putting things up high where he couldn’t reach them. Well, he was going to fix that! First, it was the kitchen counters, then the bathroom sink, tables, dressers, etc. He was driving everyone nuts! They tried two-sided tape and special pads you could buy to keep cats off the counters. None of that worked. They finally tried spraying him with a squirt bottle.

That didn’t work either. In fact, he became so well known about his ability to resist the squirt bottle that he was voted into the Feline Hall of Fame.

How Are the Cats Doing on Their 2017 Resolutions?

Standard

We’re two weeks into the new year. How are you doing with the resolutions you made? Doing pretty good on mine, but let’s check in with some cats to see how they’re doing.

ca43d-beautiful2bface

He wanted to remain adorable and handsome. I think he’ll keep that resolution!

Resourcefulness is the name of the game here. I think this cat is doing a very good job of that.

resolutions

One cat wanted to be helpful by sitting on whatever I was going to pick up, but I think this cat is doing a much better job.

where-was-your-bone-10-minutes-ago

Another cat was going to forgive his enemies. I highly doubt that! Don’t think this cat will forgive anytime soon either.

mad-cat

The next resolution was exercising to stay in shape. A bit destructive, but definitely exercise!

if-it-makes-any-difference-i-caught-the-fly

One cat resolved to be kind to the dog. Looks like that’s going well.

together

Another cat was going to “learn him a book”. Doesn’t look like he’s being very patient about the whole thing.

turn-the-page

Along that same line, one was going to learn or study a new art form. I think he’s nailed it!

being-normal-is-boring

All of the cats resolved to spend more time with their friends.

favorite-show

As if 15 hours isn’t enough, they also all resolved to get more sleep.

cat-hugging-mouse

So far, I think the group has done pretty well with their resolutions. What do you think?

Cat Resolutions for 2017

Standard

Did you make your resolutions for the new year? If so, how long will you be able to stick to them? I used to make a big list when I was younger, but not so much anymore. At my age, it will get done when I get around to it. :>) My cats probably made theirs, but a lot depends on whether I cooperate or not. Let’s see……….

I will remain adorable and handsome. (That’s a given)

I will be resourceful when Mom doesn’t give me enough food. (Going to have to watch what I leave on the counter)

I will always be helpful. (Yeah, right!)

I will forgive my enemies. (Didn’t know you had any)

I will exercise to stay in shape. (Me too)

I will attempt to be kind to the dog. (This will last about five minutes!)

I will learn something new. (No comment)

I will study an art form. (You do that every day when you sleep)

I will spend time with friends. (Me too)

I will get sufficient rest. (15 hours isn’t enough?)

If my human doesn’t cooperate with me in 2017, this is what will happen.

Hummm, kitty cats, as your human, I’m not really worried about that. You guys are so spoiled and pampered that you’d never want to leave. Nice try though. What are your cat’s resolutions?

What Do Cats Think About the World Series?

Standard

Several cats in the town of Mudville decided they should have a baseball team. They had watched their humans laughing, yelling, jumping up and down and doing all kind of crazy things when they watched the World Series. It looked like a lot of fun! They called themselves the Mudville Mousers. It was tough to get the right cats to play the different areas of the field, but they finally did it. Kirby was the pitcher because it looked like he was quite good with his paws on AND off the field.

Kneading

Muffins was the catcher because that’s what he could do!

The Reflexes of a Cat

Next to be chosen were the outfielders. Their names were Huey, Louie, and Dewey.

a-group-of-cats

Muggles was chosen to be the shortstop because he was so talented.

Cleo was on first base,

Cuddles played second base,

and Ginger was on third base because nobody wanted to mess with her.

The day and time for the game with the Farthington Felines was set, but the game was never played. The Felines never showed up because they were taking a nap. When the Mousers were interviewed about how they felt about their game and the World Series, these were the results.

Well, so much for that. Maybe one of these days these cats will get their act together and play a game. In the meantime, I’m sure they’re enjoying their naps!

Cats Are FALLing

Standard

It’s official. Seasons have changed and it is now fall. Love this time of the year with the cooler temperatures and beaufiful colors. What does this have to do with cats? They notice the change of the seasons also. My friend, Colin, has some suggestions for keeping your cat happy during the fall season. Will share his ideas as well as my own. Here’s Colin!

The most important thing to do is to keep your cat active, to the end I have the following suggestions:

1. Hide small piles of catnip behind fragile objects on high shelves, this has the added benefit of giving your cat a chance to watch you clean up the mess.

it-wasnt-me

2. Buy a number of life like toy mice and hide them. Your cats will find them and leave them where you will trip over them in the middle of the night and think it is a real mouse, which will entertain your cat for hours.

helping-pets-16

3. Give your cat a bath, he will find it fascinating to watch you tend your wounds.

4. Leave a bag of dry food slightly open, your cat will find a way to get it open and help herself to a tasty snack.

pop-tarts
5. Start playing a game with your cat with treats, try tossing the treats to your cat.
pull-the-plug
If everything else fails, give your cat a nice soft blanket to sleep on in his or her favorite window.
Thank you, Colin! Good ideas even though some may backfire on you. 🙂 During this time of year, you may see cats FALLing asleep anywhere.

Answers to: What Kind of a Play Date is YOUR Cat?

Standard

So what kind of play date is your cat? If your answers were mostly A’s, your kitty is outgoing, amicable, and usually up for a good time. Mostly B answers tell you that you cat enjoys your company, but she REALLY enjoys her naps. Mostly C’s indicate that your cat doesn’t play by the rules! She makes the rules. (You probably already know that!) Finally, D answers show that the shy play date enjoys some interaction but isn’t the one to initiate it.

1. You pull out the feathered wand toy and invite your cat to play. How does she react?

a. She eagerly looks at you, ready to cut loose!

b. She ignores you from behind closed eyelids.

c. She sees you, spurns your invitation, and begins playing with a different toy.

d. She looks interested and will join you after some coaxing and perhaps some baby talk.

2. Which human game would your cat most enjoy?

a. Charades: She’s incredibly animated and likes to have fun.

b. Checkers: She’d mostly like lying beside the board and batting the playing pieces.

c. Simon Says: She’s always Simon, of course.

d. Hide-and-Seek: She prefers the hiding to the seeking.

3. You return home from an outing. How does your cat greet you?

     a. She meows and rubs against your leg, noticeably happy for your return.

     b. She doesn’t budge from her favorite lounging spot. After all, she just saw you a few hours ago.

     c. She runs into the kitchen demanding food.

     d. She carefully watches you from afar and joins you when she’s ready.

4. How does your sleeping cat react when you pet her?

a. She replies with the most adorable noises and stretches.

b. She remains firmly planted in Snoozeville.

c. She makes irritated sounds, telling you to leave her alone.

d. She peeks at you with one eye, then curls up and goes back to sleep.

5. If your cat were a professional athlete, what would her nickname be?

     a. The Purr-minator: a competitor but always out for a good time.

     b. The Slugger: breaking multiple records for her slug imitations.

     c. General Na-paw-leon or simply the General: known for her controlling behavior on and off the field.

     d. Hide-y-Klum: can never be reached for interviews.

6. What would your cat’s Monopoly strategy be?

     a. To engage you in a game of batting hotels back and forth.

b. To see how much of the board she could cover with her entire body.

c. To put all the playing pieces under the sofa and then stare at you until you retrieve them.

d. To climb under the box’s lid.

7. What’s your cat’s secret weapon “move” that results in your full attention every time?

     a. Pawing playfully at you and giving that irresistible “Puss-in-Boots” look.

     b. Rolling over and exposing her sweet belly.

     c. Incessant meowing and knocking things over.

     d. Curling into a tight ball and pulling her little paw over her face.

What results did you end up with? My Kirby is a friendly play date, but my Sammy is a shy play date. Makes sense since they’re so different in personalities. Look forward to hearing your results!

Why Your Cat Will Play With Just About Anything

Standard

For humans, summer is the time to play and relax as much as possible. Go camping, golfing, fishing, take a vacation or whatever you choose to do to unwind. Cats have the luxury of being able to play every day regardless of the weather or where they are living. According to a cat behavioral consultant, Daniel Quaghozzi, from San Francisco, most domestic cats are pretty bored. We, as humans, underestimate the amount of interactive play they need on a daily basis. We get excited about a brand new toy we’ve bought them, but most of the time, they prefer the packaging it came in! Sound familiar?

Bored

Let’s take a look at some cats playing with THEIR choice of toys.

Wormhole

They get their exercise for the day playing with this.

Out of Toilet Paper

Nice try, but not a good excuse!

Looks like Snowflake

Cardboard is always a favorite toy.

ATT00010

Don’t think you’d want to see this!

Highly Trained Technicians

Or this!

New Curtains

Sometimes you might not even know they’ve been playing around unless………

Who Dun It

Pulling Crap

Sometimes they want to play with “little humans”.

Pets and Kids

They might get a surprise when they play with adults.

Spoil Sport

And, of course, there’s always the dog.

Apologize

To sum up, cats don’t always get excited to play with the toys we think they should.

Cat Toys

Sometimes our cats can be too curious for their own good. And while it’s fun to watch them turn just about anything into a toy, we have to be careful about what they can get their paws on. Stringlike objects, such as yarn, can cause intestinal blockages or strangulation. Plastic bags can suffocate and the handles can get caught on a cat’s neck. Small objects could be chocking hazards. Always use your good judgement.

What kind of everyday materials does your cat like to play with? Would love to hear your stories.
