The Mickey Mouse Club

Standard

As kittens, Rupert and his brothers and sisters naturally liked to play. There were many things to play with, such as balls, string, yarn, and whatever they could find in the house. Sometimes, it turned out, they played with things they shouldn’t. However, that didn’t stop them. Out of all the things Rupert liked, his favorite became a mouse filled with catnip. He would toss it in the air and then go pounce on it. He had so much fun and would play until he just was too tired to move anymore.

When winter turned to spring and the snow was all gone, the kittens were allowed to go outside and play in the yard. Oh, my, was that a treat! There were all kind of new things to investigate and discover. One day, Rupert was lying down next to his mama just enjoying the sunshine and watching his brothers and sisters. Suddenly, a small creature ran past them and startled Rupert. “What was that?”, asked Rupert. “That’s a real mouse, not a toy one.” said Mama. Rupert was amazed at how fast a real mouse was! He couldn’t wait until he could play with the real thing!

The humans in the house started talking about the days of their growing up and watching the Mickey Mouse Club on TV. Rupert couldn’t quit thinking about that and the real mouse he saw out in the yard. Here was his chance! He decided to join this Mickey Mouse thing so he could play with real mice. However, he became very disappointed.

Spring Has Sprung!

Standard

I’m sure that we have a few more snowstorms coming in this part of the country, but it’s spring according to the calendar. Let’s see how our furry friends like spring.

Since we lost an hour a few weeks back, it takes a while to get moving.

On top of that, cats may have trouble getting their humans up!

However, once our friends are up, there are things to do.

Once the necessities are out of the way, it’s time to eat.

and relax.

Then it’s time to play hide and seek.

Play with friends.

Catch a mouse.

Exercise

Have a treat.

After all that, it’s time to rest again.
Before evening, there might be time to pretend to be a Superhero

or to just simply watch people go by.

Some cats “spring” forward better than others. Don’t think this one is handling it too well!

Are you happy that spring is here?

‘Twas the Night Before Christmas (According to Cats)

Standard

‘Twas the night before Christmas

and all through the house

all the creatures were stirring.

Even the mouse!

The stockings were hung by the chimney with care

in hopes that St. Claws soon would be there.

Mom in her kerchief and I in my cap

had just settled down for a long winter’s nap.

When out on the lawn arose such a clatter,

I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter.

When what to my wondering eyes should appear

but a miniature sleigh

and one old horse.

All the reindeer were sick

so Santa had to rely

on one old horse

that just couldn’t fly.

When Santa was let in

through the front door,

he immediately scared

the cats on the floor.

The cats were excited

to see what they’d get

as Santa delivered the gifts

to each pet.

Having finished his work,

Santa went to the door.

He climbed in his sleigh

and started to snore.

As the horse moved on

and was soon out of sight,

Santa was dreaming about the catnip

he would have later tonight.

Hope you enjoyed this. Want to wish each one of my readers a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful 2017! God bless each and every one of you.

Cats Are FALLing

Standard

It’s official. Seasons have changed and it is now fall. Love this time of the year with the cooler temperatures and beaufiful colors. What does this have to do with cats? They notice the change of the seasons also. My friend, Colin, has some suggestions for keeping your cat happy during the fall season. Will share his ideas as well as my own. Here’s Colin!

The most important thing to do is to keep your cat active, to the end I have the following suggestions:

1. Hide small piles of catnip behind fragile objects on high shelves, this has the added benefit of giving your cat a chance to watch you clean up the mess.

it-wasnt-me

2. Buy a number of life like toy mice and hide them. Your cats will find them and leave them where you will trip over them in the middle of the night and think it is a real mouse, which will entertain your cat for hours.

3. Give your cat a bath, he will find it fascinating to watch you tend your wounds.

4. Leave a bag of dry food slightly open, your cat will find a way to get it open and help herself to a tasty snack.

5. Start playing a game with your cat with treats, try tossing the treats to your cat.

If everything else fails, give your cat a nice soft blanket to sleep on in his or her favorite window.
Thank you, Colin! Good ideas even though some may backfire on you. 🙂 During this time of year, you may see cats FALLing asleep anywhere.

Ways to Keep YOUR Cat Amused

Standard

Going to share some more ideas from my friend, Colin. There are easy ways to keep your cat amused and hard ways. Here’s what he has to say.

A cat is an unique creature, as such all cats need unique entertainment. Below you will find a few helpful hints to aid you in entertaining a cat.

The lazy way:

A pool of catnip. If your cat likes catnip (what cat doesn’t?), a liberal amount of catnip will keep him or her entertained for hours.

Massive Catnip Growing Operation

The normal way:

A toy that you toss to your cat, he bats it around until he get bored and decides to take the toy to another room. The next step involves you running after the cat in a vain attempt to recover the toy. Don’t lose hope, you will get the toy back once your cat grows bored again.

Bathroom

A harder way:

Devise an elaborate maze to send a cat toy through, build it while your cat supervises and knocks things over. Don’t stop her, she’s having more fun than she will when the maze is complete.

Missing the Moat

The hard way:

Set fragile objects along various tables, sprinkle catnip around each object. Lure your cat near one of the objects with a toy, then sit back and watch as your cat enjoys tossing the objects off the tables.
Make sure you remove the broken objects before your cat plays with them again.

Thanks for reading. Please feel free to share any ideas you have about keeping a cat entertained.

Thanks, Colin! You can read more of his great blogs at Mageowl’s Blog. I’m sure he’d love to hear from you.

More Problems For Your TOO MANY CATS

You might have to resort to this.

Cats, the Gift That Keeps On Giving

Cats like having their own hiding places or comfortable spots where they just like to be left alone.

The “Kitten” Bowl is About to Start!

Standard

It’s a beautiful day in Santa Clara, California, and everyone is anticipating the start of the “Kitten” Bowl. There are eight contestants on each team. The goal is to see which team can get to the catnip in the end zone first. The contestants were introduced last week in this blog. If you missed that, you can check them out while you’re waiting for the game to start.

Looks like we’re ready. Team A gets to go first. Will they get to the catnip or will Team B be able to stop them? The whistle blows and here we go!!!!

I said the whistle blows and here we go!!! Ummmm, maybe the referee will tell us what’s happening because there’s no activity on the field. What in the world?!!

Referee: Team A has a five yard penalty for delay of game!

Seems like there are several problems with this team. Sandy is trying to sing the National Anthem (or should I say screech the National Anthem)

Whenever I Have a Problem I Sing

Ginger ran too much in practice and is too tired to play.

What Are You Talking About

Tabby couldn’t find the right shoes.

These Aren't My Shoes

Merlin decided he didn’t like the moment and was going to take a nap.

Today I Will Live in the Moment

Kirby was too busy smelling the flowers.

Smells So Good!

The only one who seemed to be ready was Fluffy. He was ready to receive anything he could catch.

Let It Snow

Referee: Since Team A can’t get their act together, it will be Team B’s turn!!

Okay, now maybe we’ll see some action. Since Team A is all over the field doing their thing, Team B should be able to go right down the field and get the catnip first. Here we go!!!!!!   Or not……..

Arvin likes to eat flowers

He Doesn't Really Care If She Loves Him

which Fang thinks is really funny!

I'll Laugh At You

Rhett is sad because of Scarlett

Tell Scarlett I Do Give a Damn

and Whiskers is having a fit about his whiskers not looking good.

Don't Look At My Whiskers

Snuggles is looking for a friend.

Adorable

Sammy would rather run in the house instead of on a grassy field.

I Have to Run

So, of course, the referee is going to give Team B a five-yard penalty also. Now what are we going to do? Morris, from Team A, is really disgusted about the whole thing.

You're Still Talking

Smarty, from Team B, seems to have all the answers, but that’s not much help.

I Have All the Answers

What about the quarterbacks. Which one is going to lead their team to the catnip? Guess it won’t be the one for Team B. He’s too busy showing off his beautiful coat!

Amazing Tail

Here comes the quarterback from Team A. Now we’re talking! I know who’s going to win this game!

No Time to Explain

His team piles in, they grab the catnip, and win the game! Way to go Team A!

Whew! Finally got through that one. I think the big boys had better forget the Kitten Bowl next year and leave it up to the kittens. They seem to have the energy to pull it off better. Oh, well, live and learn. Hope you enjoyed it.

Christmas Day (Kitty Style)

Standard

It was a different Christmas with Mom being gone, but the boys and I made it through. I hope your Christmas Eve and Day was joyful and full of hope. Looking forward to a better year.

The day of Christmas Eve was exciting since everyone was getting ready for Santa Claus. There were last minute things to finish up with wrapping presents, cleaning house, and getting ready for the Christmas service at church. Sometimes things got a little confusing.

Your Death Will Be Slow and Painful

The Vacuum Cleaner is Out

While I was at church, the boys were making their lists and checking them twice.

Kitty and His Computer

But some of them didn’t want to stop and go to bed!

Enough Internet

Tell Santa I Want Catnipz

Finally, everyone was asleep and the house was quiet.

The Children Were All Nestled Snug in Their Beds

Christmas morning dawned bright and early with snow on the ground.

Dashing

It wasn’t long until everyone wanted to see their presents, but there was a minor accident to clean up first.

The Tree is Dead

Once that was cleaned up, it was time to open presents.

What Did I Get

This Is Just What I Wanted

Ribbons

Some were a little upset about cleaning up afterwards.

Throwing Away the Good Stuff

And some were a little too happy! Wonder what he got into.

Too Much of Something

And now it’s time to get back to “normal”, whatever that is. When you have cats, it’s hard to know sometimes. Whatever that happens to be, this is a definite………

Rewarding experience

See you in 2016!

Massive Catnip Operation

Standard

Frank lived in a house close to the woods. Since there was a pet door in the house, he was allowed to go in and out as he pleased. This made Frank very happy!  He enjoyed exploring the woods and finding all kind of things to chase, investigate, or lay on. He wasn’t prepared for what he found one day though!

Massive Catnip Growing Operation

Barely able to contain his excitement, he ran back to the house and started to spread the news to his friends around the neighborhood. They all went with Frank back into the woods and collected as much catnip as they could carry. They were looking forward to having a lot of fun, but there were unexpected consequences also.

Tuffy and Mouser started having hallucinations:

Do Not Look Behind You

I Haven't Seen Your LSD

Fluff and Whitney decided that they could form a band:

Groovin

Da Kats in Da Cradle

Frank and George wanted to play war games:

Tomorrow We Attack at Dawn

Cat-ling Guns

Muffin started hearing voices in his head:

Voices

Larry became really worried about his friend, Harry:

How Much Catnip

Molly’s imagination started running wild:

The Closet is Staring At Us

The friends were using so much catnip that some of the owners told them to leave. They just didn’t want to deal with all of the side effects. Low-income housing was the only thing the poor cats could afford.

Low Income Housing

Some of them decided that enough was enough and quit the catnip. Others, however, wouldn’t give it up.

Nip Dealer

Wanna Buy Some Drugs

Some even got caught.

Dealing in Nip

So, please TALK TO YOUR CATS ABOUT CATNIP! This is NOT a pretty picture.

Talk to Your Cats About Catnip!

Standard

Do you remember the commercial with eggs frying in a pan and the announcer is saying, “This is your brain on drugs.”? With the use of drugs being so much higher now than when my kids were growing up, every parent is encouraged to have that talk with their kids. In this blog, I’m using that same theme to talk about catnip for cats. Hope you enjoy.

First of all, let’s talk about what catnip is. Nepeta cataria, or catnip, is a strong-scented mint that contains a volatile oil that’s easily released into the air. Biting or rolling on the plant crushes the leaves, and releases the oil so Kitty can get a good sniff. It doesn’t take much. Cats can detect catnip oil in the air at a saturation as low as one part per billion. Whoa! That’s pretty amazing!

Catnip

How does catnip affect your cat? Rather than a simple smell, the chemical in catnip resembles sedative components also found in the valerian plant, which may be used in natural therapies to calm pets and people. Catnip also may be similar to one of the substances found in tomcat urine—yucky to you, but a lovely smell to the cat! In fact, this pheromone in urine often triggers the same sort of behavioral reaction in cats as exposure to catnip.

These types of chemicals, once inhaled, enter the cat’s highly specialized scenting organ through the roof of the mouth. The vomeronasal, or Jacobson’s organs, sit between the hard palate of the mouth and the septum of the nose, and connect to the mouth via tiny conduits directly behind the cat’s upper incisor teeth. You may see kitty perform an odd facial grimace with lips curled back and mouth open when employing this organ.

The Jacobson’s organs are linked to the hypothalamus, an area of the brain that acts like a switchboard to direct information to higher centers. This part of the brain integrates taste and smell, motivates appetite, and triggers a variety of behaviors.

Too Much Catnip

Catnip in cats affects the same biochemical pathways that are affected by marijuana and LSD in people. In its simplest terms, catnip is a feline hallucinogen. The kitty “high” lasts from five to 15 minutes, and causes a loss of inhibition. While the behaviors may look similar to cats-in-love, catnip is NOT a feline aphrodisiac. It prompts similar behaviors in both neutered and intact cats. Catnip-intoxicated cats act like furry fools who roll and flop about on the floor, drool, and have a wonderful relaxing time.

Cats rarely respond to catnip until they are about six months old, and some cats never do. The trait is an inherited one, with only two out of three domestic cats being affected; male cats seem to respond more strongly than females. The quality of the catnip also influences the response. With my two, Kirby reacts to it, but Sammy doesn’t.

Using Catnip

So, I’d like to emphasize the point again because if you don’t………..

Talk to Your Cats About Catnip

you might have to put up with these things!

My Catnip is Gone

Massive Catnip Growing Operation

Well! That story is for another time. Tell us about your cats and how silly they can get when they are around catnip. Would love to hear your comments.
